Research Essay: Mars One Project

RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Topic:

The Mars One Project: A Story of Future Human Evolution Today

Brief Description:

The Mars One Project is headed by Mars One not-for-profit foundation and Interplanetary Media Group. Currently, plans are underway to establish a permanent human colony on the planet Mars by year 2023. Hundreds of thousands of applicants are actively undergoing a large-scale international application process which began on April 22, 2013. This process consists of a letter, a resume, a video, and various steps to follow in which the applicant must complete. A total of four astronauts will be selected to land on Mars in year 2023. Every two years to follow further teams of two astronauts will be selected to make the one way trip joining the colony. By year 2033 the program intends to have over twenty people living and working on Mars. Currently, various satellites, exploration vehicles, and supplies are being sent to Mars in preparation for the next step in human evolution and space exploration. With an estimated and growing cost of over $6 billion US dollars, a global reality-TV media event and TV series is intended to provide most of the funds to finance the expedition.

Why Is Mars One Important?

Since the beginning of what human beings consider to be known as ‘time’, both science and the bible agree that evolution is a part of life. With each passing year our race strives forward while pushing the limits of our fore-fathers. Not since the founding of western America or the late moon landing will such an extraordinary human event take place. For decades, astral-scientists have completed hypothetical research that state an interplanetary society would be much more beneficial than the current one we live in today. Humans living on Mars alike walking on Earth’s Moon can be summed up in one sentence and quote, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. – Neil Armstrong.

Media and Publications:

Mars One has been reported on in the media since May, 2012. When the official webpage was launched the media picked up on it immediately. A printed article followed the day after. Every month, hundreds of articles printed world-wide. Last month, September of 2013 includes articles from The New York Times, BBC Radio, The Daily Mail, NBC News, The Guardian, TIME, National Geographic, ABC, The Weather Network and The Epoch Times.

Earth's Mankind Plan to Embark On a Mission to Planet Mars... Is this the beginning of interplanetary migration or are humans finally returning home? In 2023, the Mars One Project plans to become the largest and most spectacular media event ever in recorded history. The countdown is on...

Introduction/Proposal:

The Mars One Project is headed by Mars One not-for-profit foundation and Interplanetary Media Group (Mars One, About Mars One, P.5, 2013).

Humans living on Mars alike walking on Earth’s Moon can be summed up in one sentence and quote, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. – Neil Armstrong.

Methodology:

Mars One has been reported on in the media since May, 2012. When the

official webpage was launched the media picked up on it immediately. A printed article followed the day after. Every month, hundreds of articles are printed world-wide. Last

month, September of 2013 includes articles from The New York Times, BBC Radio, The Daily Mail, NBC News, The Guardian, TIME, National Geographic, ABC, The Weather Network and The Epoch Times.

The world will soon likely get to know some of the round one applicants as the entire project is planned to be taped and part of an even larger-scaled future reality show. Mars One Ambassador and co-creator of popular reality television show ‘Big Brother’ Paul Romer has been chosen to play an instrumental role in the creation of the future program. Romer says, "The mission to Mars is one of the most exciting and inspirational stories of all time and we do want to share that with our audience, but more in the way that the moon landing is shared with our audience or the Olympics.”

As of April 2013, the mission is as follows (Wiki, Mars One, 4, 2013).

2013: A replica of the settlement will be built for training purposes.

2014: The first Communications satellite will be produced.

2015: Six teams of four astronauts will be developed.

2016: A supply mission will be launched with 2,500 kilograms of food.

2018: An exploration vehicle will launch to pick the location of the settlement.

2021: Six capsules, another rover vehicle, two living units, two life support units, and two supply units will launch.

2022: A Space X Falcon Heavy will launch with the first four colonists.

2023: The first four colonists will arrive on Mars in a modified Dragon capsule.

2025: The second group of four colonists will arrive. Every two years an additional group of four colonists will arrive.

2033: The colony will reach 20 settlers.

Results:

The one way trip, excluding the cost of maintaining four astronauts on Mars until they die is has the approximated cost of 6 billion USD (Wiki, Mars One, 22, 2013). Mars One is a not-for-profit organization and the controlling stockholder of the for-profit Interplanetary Media Group (Wiki, Mars One, 25, 2013). The future global media spectacular is planned to be the largest and most exciting event ever recorded in history.

Mars One sponsors to date include Byte Internet, Aleph Objects, Inc., Verkkokauppa.com, Gerald W. Driggers, SoftLayer Technology Inc., VBC Notarissen, MeetIn, Intrepid Research, Trans Space Travels, Edinburgh Int. Science Festival, Baluw Research, Mind Power Hungary, Regus, Feinstein Associates, KIVI NIRIA, Rockstart Accelerator, Space Dream Studios, K liniek, Mpress Books, Make Amsterdam, and Great Communicators (Wiki, Mars One, 22, 2013). Secondly, official Mars One donations have already reached a total of over $176,464. Finally, each major piece of technology that is needed in the development of the spacecraft will be donated from a specific supplier to help fund this and future missions to Mars.

Conclusions:

Lansdorp, CEO of The Mars One Project has declined questions regarding the cost estimate of the mission because he believes “it would be very stupid for us to give the prices that have been quoted per component” (Wiki, Mars One, 22, 2013). A global reality-TV media event is intended to provide most of the funds to finance the expedition. It should begin with the astronaut process and begin with the astronaut selection process and continue throughout the first years of living on Mars. The project is endorsed by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Gerard’t Hooft and is the first step in human interplanetary migration. Mars One supports future human evolution today.

MARS ONE APPLICANT - MADISON BORATTO

Madison Boratto:

Is one of the current Mars One applicants just recently featured in an article published by the CBC. Madison, 27, born and raised in Oakville and current resident of Toronto attends the Humber College Lakeshore Campus for Advertising. Her current dreams include becoming a professional Photographer though Madison spends the majority of her time aspiring to become one of the first four to travel to, and live on Mars. As one of 77,000 people who applied to the project only time will tell who will be able to handle the one way trip.

Boratto claims herself to be adventurous for as long as she can remember. She is well aware of the hundreds if not thousands of dangers awaiting her on Mars though she is looking forward to the once in a lifetime opportunity.
